But the most crucial blow to my identity happened in 2014 when the murder of Mike Brown hit national news. His death and other unjust shootings of Black people dramatically shifted my focus. Anger, disgust, and empathy swelled within me as I watched videos of Black bodies laid lifeless on the street.
